London Liberal Democrats will put rogue landlords out of business by creating a kitemark for good landlords so that renters know who to trust.
London’s rental prices are the highest in England and the second most expensive in Europe.
The private rental sector accounts for around 850,000 households in London. Landlords actually face a number of financial disincentives to keep property in good repair. The tax system does not reward them for addressing issues in their property.
By registering landlords rather than properties, we will efficiently raise standards within the sector. Accreditation will also encourage the better ones to do better.
Under our plans local authorities should not use private landlords to fulfil their housing obligations unless they are accredited and only accredited landlords can be put forward by university and college accommodation services to students seeking a property.
